Transferred Solemnity of Immaculate Conception is to be observed as a Holy Day of Obligation on Monday, December 9, 2024: By way of recent correspondence between the USCCB Committee on Canonical Affairs and Church Governance with the Holy See Dicastery For Legislative Texts that has been forwarded to us, we have learned that the transferred Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (to be observed this year on Monday, December 9) remains a Holy Day of Obligation and is to be observed accordingly. These documents with the inquiry of the USCCB and the reply of the Holy See are attached.
Accordingly, priests/parishes are to offer Masses on Monday, December 9, for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception at times conducive for the faithful to participate and fulfill the obligation of keeping this solemnity. Given that this day of obligation will be on a Monday after a Sunday of Advent, Masses for Immaculate Conception can only be offered on Monday, December 9 - as any Masses on Sunday, December 8 (including those offered in the evening), are required to be for the Second Sunday of Advent (which is of higher rank in the Liturgical Table of Days than are solemnities of Mary).
